Toyota Camry Performance Upgrades (How to Make it Faster)

You might be interested in some performance upgrades if you have the four-cylinder instead of the V6 Toyota Camry.

The Camry has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 206 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It’s not a bad little engine, but it can definitely use some improvements.

Unfortunately, since these engines are naturally aspirated, there aren’t many performance upgrades available, however, In this article, I am going to share with you some of the best options.

Toyota Camry Performance Upgrades

1. Aftermarket Cold Air Intake

The first thing that comes to mind is a cold air intake. This will give your engine more oxygen and make it run smoother, which equates to more power.

Since Air intakes are responsible for taking in air from outside the vehicle and then directing it into the engine, they are one of the best ways to get more power out of your car without having to make any modifications.

Replacing your Camry’s stock air intake system with an aftermarket one can improve performance by increasing airflow to the engine.

This can lead to an increase in performance. Air intake systems can also improve the sound of your Camry’s engine which is nice.

2. Aftermarket Exhaust

An aftermarket exhaust system is another great way to get more power out of your Camry.

The main purpose of an Exhaust on your Camry is to get rid of contaminated air on the way out of the engine.

A new exhaust system can increase the power output of your Camry’s engine by allowing more air to flow through.

This is because when you replace your stock exhaust with an aftermarket one, it allows more clean air in and less dirty air out which leads to better performance.

3. High-Performance Spark Plugs

High-performance spark plugs are a great way to get more power out of your Camry.

The main purpose of a spark plug is to ignite the fuel inside the combustion chamber and create an explosion that pushes the piston down, which in turn turns the crankshaft and makes your car move.

OEM spark plugs are great because they do the job efficiently, however, if you are looking to get more power on your Camry you can replace the stock spark plugs with something a little more powerful.

Aftermarket plugs are designed to fire more efficiently, which means less work for your engine and more power coming out of it.

4. Use a Throttle Controller

A throttle controller is an easy way to increase the power on your Camry without having to modify it.

The controller works by reducing the amount of effort needed to push down on your accelerator, which makes it easier for you to accelerate up hills or take off from a stoplight.

This doesn’t increase horsepower per se, but it does improve your car’s acceleration and make it easier to use.

2020 Toyota Camry SE Performance Upgrades

The Toyota Camry SE has been a popular choice for drivers seeking a balance of style, comfort, and performance. With the 2020 model, Toyota has made some notable improvements to the car’s performance, including upgrades to the suspension and engine. One of the most popular upgrades for the 2020 Toyota Camry SE is a cold air intake system. This modification can increase airflow to the engine, resulting in improved horsepower and torque. Other popular upgrades include performance exhaust systems, which can improve exhaust flow and enhance the car’s sound.

For drivers looking to improve handling and performance on the track, there are also suspension upgrades available. Upgraded shocks and struts, as well as sway bars and chassis braces, can help improve the car’s handling and reduce body roll. With these upgrades, the 2020 Toyota Camry SE can become a true performance machine.

Performance Enhancement Basics

The 2020 Toyota Camry SE is a popular mid-size sedan that offers a balance of performance and comfort. It comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The SE trim level adds sport-tuned suspension, larger wheels, and paddle shifters for a more engaging driving experience.

Fundamentals of Performance Upgrades

If you’re looking to enhance the performance of your 2020 Toyota Camry SE, there are a few basic upgrades you can consider. These upgrades can help improve the car’s acceleration, handling, and overall driving experience.

Air Intake Systems

Upgrading the air intake system can help increase the amount of air flowing into the engine, which can improve performance. A high-performance air intake system can help the engine breathe better and produce more power.

Exhaust Systems

Upgrading the exhaust system can help improve the car’s performance by increasing the exhaust flow. A high-performance exhaust system can help the engine breathe better and produce more power. It can also improve the sound of the car.

Suspension Upgrades

Upgrading the suspension can help improve the car’s handling and stability. A sport-tuned suspension can help reduce body roll and improve cornering performance. Upgrading the shocks and struts can also help improve ride comfort and handling.

Brake Upgrades

Upgrading the brakes can help improve the car’s stopping power and reduce brake fade. High-performance brake pads and rotors can help the car stop faster and more consistently. Upgrading the brake lines can also help improve brake feel and responsiveness.

By considering these basic upgrades, you can enhance the performance of your 2020 Toyota Camry SE while maintaining the balance of comfort and performance that makes this car so popular.

Specific Performance Upgrades

Engine Tuning and ECU Remapping

One of the most popular ways to improve the performance of a Toyota Camry SE is by tuning the engine and remapping the ECU. This can be done by installing a performance chip or by using a tuning software to reprogram the ECU. By doing so, the engine can produce more power and torque, resulting in improved acceleration and overall performance. It is important to note that this modification may affect the car’s fuel economy.

Exhaust System Improvements

Upgrading the exhaust system is another way to enhance the performance of the Toyota Camry SE. By installing a performance exhaust system, the car can breathe better, resulting in increased horsepower and torque. Additionally, a performance exhaust system can improve the sound of the car, giving it a more aggressive and sporty tone.

Air Intake Systems

Upgrading the air intake system is a simple and cost-effective way to improve the performance of the Toyota Camry SE. By installing a high-performance air filter and air intake system, the engine can breathe better, resulting in increased power and torque. This modification can also improve the car’s fuel economy.

Suspension and Braking Enhancements

Improving the suspension and braking systems of the Toyota Camry SE can enhance its handling and braking performance. Wheel and Tire Optimization

Upgrading the wheels and tires of the Toyota Camry SE can improve its handling and overall performance. By installing wider and lighter wheels and performance tires, the car can have better grip and traction, resulting in improved acceleration, braking, and cornering performance. It is important to note that this modification may affect the car’s ride quality and fuel economy.

Why Upgrade Your Toyota Camry’s Performance

  • Better Acceleration: Upgrading your Camry’s performance can help you accelerate more quickly, making merging onto highways or passing other cars on the road a breeze.
  • Improved Handling: Performance upgrades can also improve your Camry’s handling, making it more fun to drive around corners and curves.
  • Increased Power: With performance upgrades, you can increase the power of your Camry’s engine, giving you a more exhilarating driving experience.
  • Customization: Upgrading your Camry’s performance allows you to customize your car to your liking. You can choose from a variety of upgrades to make your car stand out from the crowd and reflect your personal style.

My Thoughts

There are only a few things you can do to your Camry to make it faster, but most are not really worth the price and won’t do much since it’s a naturally aspirated vehicle.

If you want a faster Toyota Camry then I personally recommend that you trade the four-cylinder with the V6 version of the Camry.

That way you’ll have more power and torque at your disposal and you won’t have to make any other modifications.
